GOVERNMENT BLOWS BUDGET

“I think everyone here knows that eliminating the deficit is the most important thing we can do to move to economic growth.”

Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Legislature, April 2, 2012

 "I actually believe that fiscal prudence and a strong economy are connected. I think that they are absolutely connected, and that’s why we have remained committed to our elimination of the deficit by 2017-18."

Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Legislature, October 22, 2014

QUEEN’S PARK – Today the Wynne government tabled a budget which includes a massive $6.7 billion deficit in an attempt to buy votes leading into provincial election.

“People in Ontario are worried about the cost of living and the fact that high costs are driving jobs out of Ontario,” said Hardeman. “Yet the government responded by increasing taxes, running a massive deficit and announcing programs that will require new expensive bureaucracies.”

The highlights of the budget include:

  • A $6.7 billion deficit and plans to run deficits for the next six years;
  • The net debt will be over $325 billion this year;
  • Annual interest payments on the debt which are now $12.5 billion, more than $1 billion a month; and
  • Tax hikes that will hit 1.8 million hard-working people and over 20,000 businesses

“The government is attempting to buy votes with taxpayers’ money, but people know that this is the government that continues to waste their money and increase the cost of goods and services they rely on,” said Hardeman. “People were looking for real relief and commitment to good fiscal management and the government failed on both counts.”
